Ever wonder how Mother's Day came about? We researched more information regarding Mother's Day and I found some fascinating information that you might be interested in.
Mother's Day celebration began in 1858 in West Virginia. It was known as "Mothers' Work Days" and eventually evolved into Mother's Day that we celebrate on the second week of May every year.
Mother's Work day was organized by Anna Reeves Jarvis in attempt to improve the sanitation of her community. She believed this would be best advocated by mothers, hence called it "Mother's Work Day". Anna Jarvis, daughter of Anna Reeves Jarvis officially established Mother's Day to dedicate her life to her mother's project.
Anna began her campaign to establish Mother's Day as national holiday. In May 1908, St. Andrews Church in Grafton, West Virginia, approved Anna's request for a Sunday mass honoring mothers. On the same year, a prominent businessman, John Wannamaker, joined Anna's campaign for Mother's Day.
In 1912, West Virginia became the first state to adopt an official Mother's Day event. Two years later, President Woodrow Wilson signed a Joint Resolution to establish Mother's Day as a national holiday.
In honor of Anna Jarvis' hard work, let us honor her and our mother's this Mother's Day and everyday. Mom and dad worked to hard to raise you. Without their help and support, you would not have achieved your goals. They deserve more than one day of your time every year. Let them know how much you appreciate them. There is no better gift than the time you spend with your beloved mother.
